Michael Philip Mossman Composed by Wynton Marsalis in a distinctive New Orleans swing style, here is a joyous medium tempo romp that features a trombone and alto sax trading solo statements over a swingin’ tutti ensemble. This unique and appealing number is a perfect change of pace for contest or festival. Little Red-Haired GirlWynton Marsalis/arr. Michael Philip Mossman Composed by jazz master Wynton Marsalis and arranged for full jazz ensemble by Michael Philip Mossman, this is an attractive chart featuring muted trumpets on the melody with answering countermelodies in the saxes and bones. The overall feel is light and breezy, with solos included for trumpet and tenor. Josie Walter Becker and Donald Fagen/arr. Mike Tomaro With more than a nod to the original recording by Steely Dan, Mike takes this tune to new heights in his funky and stylized version. Featuring a tenor and trombone duet at the top, this chart is also a great feature vehicle for guitar. However, the flexible solo section allows you to feature just about any instrument you choose. Tasty full ensemble interludes surround solo space for alto sax, trumpet and bass. This chart is a perfect choice for festivals or contests. Blackbird John Lennon and Paul McCartney/ arr. Mike Tomaro Perhaps one of the Beatles’ lesser known tunes, Blackbird remains one of their most creative and memorable. Mike Tomaro’s smooth setting uses a blend of light funk along with a brief samba section to create a truly outstanding effect. The theme is stated simply in the beginning on trumpet, followed by an array of orchestrational textures and harmonies. Sun Goddess Maurice White and Jon Lind/arr. Mike Tomaro Recorded by Earth, Wind & Fire, here is one of their classic tunes arranged in a medium funk style for jazz ensemble. Trombones take the lead in the beginning followed by solos for piano and alto sax. There is plenty of solid and effective writing for the full ensemble as well. In a Sentimental moodDuke Ellington, Irving Mills and Manny Kurtz/ arr. Mike Tomaro Mike Tomaro has beautifully adapted this well-known Ellington classic to feature tenor sax. Roger Holmes Opening softly and featuring an alto sax soloist, this chart builds intensity steadily throughout, leading to the powerful final chorus. Mike Tomaro One of the most famous jazz waltzes ever written, this small band setting of Miles Davis’ classic skillfully uses the six-horn format to create an incredibly full sound. Mark Taylor Plenty of solid tutti ensemble scoring is featured in this arrangement for small group of Sonny Rollins’ familiar Latin standard. Mark Taylor John Lewis (composer, pianist, and founder of the acclaimed Modern Jazz Quartet) penned Afternoon in Paris in the ’50s and it has remained a jazz standard ever since. This nicely crafted version for younger bands opens with a small group on the head and drums on brushes. Solos for trumpet and tenor follow, along with full ensemble statements. Mark Taylor Jazz legend Sonny Rollins has given us so many fabulous jazz standards over the years. Mark Taylor has adapted one of Sonny’s best tunes in this medium tempo chart for younger bands. Straight no ChaserThelonious Monk/arr. Mark Taylor Required literature for the noble study of Monk, this arrangement of a jazz classic will delight young bands as well as experienced groups. Roger Holmes From the acclaimed album Off the Wall, this familiar rock hit was tops on the charts for four weeks in 1979 and helped establish Michael Jackson as a creative force in pop music. Paul Murtha From country superstar Taylor Swift, here is her upbeat number one hit in an effective version for jazz ensemble.
