NEW FOR 2007 - 2008

GRADE 1½ - 2

ALL MY YESTERDAYS.Alto Saxophone Feature. Peter Blair. £28.57
The spotlight is on your alto saxophone soloist in this new pop ballad composition, but the interesting cascading lines in the winds and neat harmonic twists make this piece interesting for all the players in your ensemble. The arrangement has been carefully scored to make sure the soloist can be heard even if you don't have sound reinforcement equipment.
ANOTHER STEP TOWARD THE BLUES. Fred Sturm. £28.57
If you are looking for the perfect composition to teach the F blues, this is the answer. The first chorus uses three notes of the F-blues scale and each successive chorus adds one more note of the scale. In the rhythm section, each part begins as simply as possible, and each chorus adds one new component to each of the parts. For example, the bass starts by playing whole notes on chord roots, the second chorus has quarter notes on the roots, the third chorus uses the pattern 1-2-1-2, etc.
HOLIDAY CLASSICS. Peter Blair. £35.71
Four complete arrangements including Go Tell it on the Mountain, Joy to the World, O Little Town of Bethlehem and Up on the Housetop
Peter Blair's Christmas collections at the Grade 3 level have been favorites year after year, and this new collection of easier arrangements is sure to become a seasonal staple for younger ensembles. Each of the charts is in a contrasting style, so they can be used to create a "holiday set" for your band, even if you have a very limited budget.
THE MEMPHIS BLUES. W. C. Handy/arr. Robert Woods. £28.57
The "Father of the Blues," William Christopher Handy (1873-1958), was the first blues composer, and most music history scholars believe that The Memphis Blues was the first notated blues song in history. This arrangement was created using the original published sheet music from 1913, now located in Duke University's Historic American Sheet Music collection. As the chart unfolds, more modern elements are added but the unique character of the original is always present.'
MERCY, MERCY, MERCY. Josef Zawinul/arr. Robert Woods. £28.57
This perennial jazz favorite has been performed and recorded by hundreds of jazz players over the years, but the recording that started it all was the original 1966 Cannonball Adderley Quintet version. This new Robert Woods arrangement is modeled after Cannonball's recording and is the easiest version of this Zawinul classic ever published.
ONE FOR THE MOOCH. Peter Blair. £28.57
This is boogie-woogie that sounds solid and is easy to teach. Altos and trumpets have the melody in unison after the ensemble introduction. The saxes follow in the next chorus with unison trumpet licks in the background and the trombones laying down the very easy "boogie" line. There are written solos for alto, tenor and trumpet over the most basic I7-IV7-V7 blues changes.
RETURN OF THE MUGGLES. Robert Woods. £28.57
Yes, it's time for our friends from Hogwarts and all the "regular" people to get together again! This new chart from Robert Woods is filled with fun licks, neat chords and a swinging groove. The focus is on the ensemble throughout and includes a clever chorus of the winds at mezzopianoior some nice dynamic contrast. There is a 12-measure solo written for trumpet that may be expanded for more solos.
STREET LIFE. Jamey Aebersold/arr. Russ Michaels. £28.57
In Jamey's play along volume #2, Nothin' But Blues, this is called "Long-Meter Jazz Rock," but we figured that wasn't a very exciting title for a performance piece! So, we called it Street Life and created this arrangement so students could practice their improvised solos using the Aebersold CD. We spiced up the original melody a little but kept the form and chord structure exactly the same as the play-along.
WORK SONG. Nat Adderley/arr. Peter Blair. £28.57
Work Song is one of the best jazz classics ever in a minor key. The original Nat Adderley recording is the starting point for this new arrangement. After the first time through the head (by the trumpets and altos, of course!), the stop time section from the original is used with the harmonized melody. There is a solid shout chorus that leads to a soft ensemble passage before the solo written for alto saxophone.

GRADE 3
THE BARI THOUGHT OF YOU
. Baritone Saxophone Feature. Peter Blair. £32.14
A lush, rubato introduction sets up the infectious shuffle feel of this rockin' feature for baritone saxophone. The key selection of A-flat helps ensure that all the lines lay well for the soloist and the ranges are moderate for all the players. A guaranteed audience favorite, this hard-hitting chart will become a "must-have" for bands with strong, sassy bari players.
ELTIGREDE NEPAL. (The Tiger of Nepal). Peter Blair. £32.14
This driving 12/8 Afro-Cuban chart is an excellent selection to showcase the ensemble and an alto or tenor saxophone soloist. Following the dazzling ensemble introduction, a combo of alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet and (optional) guitar have the statement of the melody with muted brass in the background. A saxophone soli leads to the solo section which begins in swing and then returns to the original feel.
GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADWAY. George M. Cohan/arr. Carl Strommen. £32.14
The original Yankee Doodle Dandy, George M. Cohan, was a major figure in the development of Broadway, but his classic tune never sounded so good! Master arranger Carl Strommen uses his creative harmonic language and perfect sense of jazz style to turn this Broadway march into a medium slow swing chart that uses the elements of the modern jazz ensemble to the fullest. The arrangement leads off with the band playrng the first chorus in the mezzo piano range which is one of the reasons that this is a terrific selection to follow a loud "burner." The saxophones get a good workout in their soli, and there is solo space for tenor saxophone and trumpet. (Written solos are included.)
JEANNINE. Duke Pearson/arr. Robert Woods. £32.14
Long a favorite of jazz players from Wes Montgomery to Cannonball Adderley to Donald Byrd to the Manhattan Transfer, this Duke Pearson standard gets the full Robert Woods treatment. All the familiar licks and tight harmonies are here in the only published version available of this classic tune. This arrangement is in C minor, so the ranges are perfect for everyone. Please take a close look at this one!
THEY DONE ME WRONG. Peter Blair. £32.14
This slow "down and dirty" 12/8 blues has it all! Lines drenched in triplets, trumpets with plunger mutes, a stop time section with wailing saxophones, more diminished chords per square inch than "regular" blues...who could ask for anything more?

GRADE 4
BLUE OPENING
. Ike Sturm. £32.14
Ike is one of the most "happening" bass players on the New York scene today, and this creative piece demonstrates that his writing chops are equally strong. (It doesn't hurt that his dad, Fred Sturm, wrote the arrangement!) The swinging lines in the winds over a well written hip-hop groove in the rhythm section make this a very appealing, modern-sounding chart. Make no mistake, though this piece is jazz through and through! There are extended solos for tenor saxophone and trumpet with extensive ideas for improvisation provided. (Trumpet 1 to written C with one D at the end, Trombone to F.)
CABEZA DE QUESO. Fred Sturm. £32.14
This piece was commissioned for the 2007 Wisconsin State Honors jazz ensemble, so the title is especially appropriate. (Cabeza de queso translates to "cheese head.") There is a warm introductory chorale by the winds which leads to the samba groove of the chart. You'll need a solid piano player for the most effective performance of this piece, and there is also an important percussion part that complements with the drum set. Fred provides extensive ideas for improvisation for your alto soloist, but tenor, trumpet or vibes may be substituted if an alto improviser is not available. (Trumpet 1 to written D, Trombone 1 to B-flat. The written sections of the piano part may be doubled with vibes or marimba.)
ON 10 DOWLING STREET. Bob Washut. £32.14
Alternating between Latin and swing, this impressive new piece is reminiscent of the way jazz players usually perform On Green Dolphin Street. The opening Latin section is over a rhythmic ostinato and pedal F, which makes the release to swing even more effective. The solos for alto saxophone and trumpet are one chorus each (but could easily be extended) using the same Latin/swing format as the head. Following the solo section is a saxophone soli and an exciting "breakdown" section. Some wide dynamic contrasts in the final ensemble section take the chart out. (Trumpet 1 to written D, Trombone to A-flat, Trombone 4 is for bass trombone.)
RIVERSCAPE. Fred Sturm. £32.14
This composition was out of print for some time, and we are happy to be able to make it available again. Riverscape has long been a staple in high school jazz repertoire and. is included on several major contest lists. This soprano saxophone feature uses shifting harmonic "color palettes" and mixed meter to create a fabulous and interesting composition.
SKYHAWK. Fred Sturm. £32.14
This latest offering from Fred includes all the elements of his writing that have made him a composer recognized around the world. The dramatic ensemble opening will assure your audience that this composition is something special. The hypnotic Latin flavor is set by the rhythm section, and as layer after layer of lines and pads are added the chart builds excitement to the highest level. There is a tenor solo that calls for a solid improviser, but guitar or trumpet may be substituted if desired. The Deer Valley High School Jazz Ensemble premiered this piece at the 2006 Midwest Band and Orchestra clinic. (Trumpet 1 to written C, Trombone 1 to B-flat. Includes a Conga Drum part.)
