LI'L OL'BLUE NOTE. Grade 5 £35.71 We've discontinued the young version of this tune in preference for this up-graded premium jazz ensemble arrangement. Recorded on SWR Big Band CD, "Basie-cally Sammy" The tempo is bright [200] and the ensemble work is designed for more mature players. The solos are trombone, tenor sax and piano. PLEASIN'. Grade 3 £35.71 If you are tired of the same old chord structures for jazz ensemble, you should like playing this tune. It is filled with beautiful melodic and harmonic structures in a medium jazz setting. Grade 3. TIME STREAM. Grade 3-4 £35.71 A very bright tune set in a soft two beat style , played by a small combo and opening up into some jazz tenor and trumpet solos, followed by a hard swinging ensemble chorus. Recorded on A Portrait of Sammy" and "Basie-cally Sammy" CDs. THE HEAT'S ON. Grade 3-4 £35.71 Recorded originally by Count Basie, but revised for the new SWR Big Band CD "Basie-cally Sammy" The tempo is very bright and features tenor jazz with openings for much drum work or an inserted drum feature. VERONIQUE. Grade 3 £35.71 Beautiful tenor sax feature ballad.recorded on the 2005 CD A Portrait of Sammy" by Pete Christlieb. Although recorded with strings, this published arrangement has bee re-written for regular jazz ensemble instrumentation. A WARM BREEZE. Grade-3-4 £35.71 A Count Basie classic recently recorded by the SWR Big Band on the CD "This is the Moment" plus Sammy's own "A Portrait of Sammy" Features a sax chorus and solos by trombone, tenor sax, trumpet and piano. Contains a soft ensemble chorus leading into an exposive big ensemble, chorus. JA-DA. Grade3-4 £35.71 This arrangement was originally recorded by the Count Basie orchestra and played by him at a Grammy Awards concert. Recently recorded by the SWR Big Band on the CD, "Basie-cally Sammy". It has optional solos for everyone . It features trombone and alto sax jazz and and a couple of soft ensemble choruses and a full ensemble rendition. DIMENSIONS IN BLUE. Grade 4 £35.71 This tune was originally written for and played by Count Basie as a television theme song called "Super Big Band" ....thus, no featured solos. It starts "big" with drums and a driving big band ensemble. The second chorus features a well structured sax chorus, finally winding up with a typical Basie large swinging ensemble chorus. THE QUEEN OF SCHMOOZE. Grade 2 £25.00 This tune has comfortable tempo and easy ranges, but a very handsome harmonic structure. Every part is interesting, and contributes to the whole picture. Trumpet, Alto Sax and Piano solos have written suggested solos, and the bass part is completely written out. The music also includes some well balanced ensemble choruses. In maintaining a "jazz feel," eighth notes are not played strictly. They must have a "lazy" feel. When playing two consecutive eighth notes, the second one is delayed. Although dynamics, tempo and sound are of utmost importance, the feel of the jazz idiom remains primary. Much care has been taken in the construction of this arrangement to meet this goal. SATIN 'N GLASS. Grade3-4 £35.71 This is a very beautiful Flugelhorn solo that was featured on the Sammy Nestico orchestra CD, "Night Flight". It was beautifully performed by Guido Basso, who takes Sammy's tune, adds his own brand of velvet, and makes it very personal. Introduction and endings are rubato and needs directing. NICOLE. Grade 2 £25.00 Straight 8ths throughout. Electric rhythm is preferable. Bar 27 is very full, with sax line and trumpet melody predominate. Guitar should not be "locked" into the part The music is down to a whisper for the ending. NIGHT FLOWER, Grade 2 £25.00 This arrangement combines two styles, (straight 8ths and a jazz 4/4 feel) Make sure there is an absolute balance between the Electric Guitar and Electric Piano in the introduction. It occurs again during the ending. When the double time jazz starts at bar 20keep it at a moderate volume level.. .it will move better this way. Always strive for a good balance. Bar 55 should be directed as an 8/8 measure. PEPPERMINT TREE. Grade 2 £25.00 Not much room for dynamic variation here. Although it moves along, play it "smoothly" with 8th notes sounding long rather than short. The "attitude" is similar to playing a television Commercial, with steady rhythm and good balance, but not much dynamic range. Drummer must use his part only as a guide, with a strong approach. REACHIN' FOR A RAINBOW. Grade 2 £25.00 In bars 18/19 26/27 and 62/63 lower the 3rd and 4th trumpets if it is out of their range. Play with a "crisp" feel treating short notes "very short". It will really help. LOST STAR. Grade 2 £25.00 The first 12 bars asks for a good balance and presence from the rhythm section, (preferably electric) We need some real dynamic change at bars 29 and 61, so make it happen! (Nice and full) The last ensemble (bar 61) has some saxophone counter-melody that should be heard strongly. FREE FLIGHT. Grade 4 £35.71 Balance is the key starting at bar 7 and through bar 26. Each statement from the different sections is important for the over-all balance. During the unison band chorus at bar 71, feel free to change a figure to "tailor" it for your ensemble. It isn't written in stone, and any change won't detract from the principle idea of the chorus. GOOD NEWS!. Grade 2 £25.00 Nice and crisp! Avoid any "sluggish" approach from the band. Keep it crisp and accented. Finally at bar 72.. .everyone soft and together! Pay attention to the technique markings. KATIE. Grade 2 £25.00 This arrangement calls for a very "lazy" feel. Keep saxes quiet behind Piano solo at bars 21-25. Work on the "split' triplets at bars 35 and 36. They offer a chance for some very "clean" ensemble work. Very full at measure 43 and back down to a whisper for the ending. LOOSE CHANGE. Grade 2 £25.00 Obtaining a good blend is always difficult with an "open" sax voicing as noted here at bar73. It may take several attempts before this is achieved. This arrangement also uses the voicing of 1st Alto sax in prime unison with 1st Trumpet during ensemble sections. This is noted for additional support for a weaker section. As for dynamics, rememberup the scale raises the level and down the scale lowers the volume. THIS IS THE MOMENT. Grade 2 £25.00 Play it with the Count Basie style in mind. The real challenge is to play softly and maintain a good steady sense of time. Also note that the trumpets are very low, so we must be careful not to cover them up during the soft ensemble sections. THIS IS THE MOMENT (Professional Series). Grade 4 £35.71 Although this arrangement is similar in style with a ballad, it must maintain a steady groove. At bar 101 Drums fill tastefully in the holes between ensemble phrases. Later on, it is soft again (maintaining that jazz pulse). The last chorus establishes much room for a wide spread of dynamics, generating a great performance. SWEETS. Grade 2 £25.00 This tune is dedicated to jazz trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison. It is a happy conversation between the band and the soloist. To achieve a good blend, all dynamics are in the mf range, with articulations playing a very important role. Listen to the CD recording, for a good example to emulate. THE SPIN DOCTOR. Grade 2 £25.00 In maintaining a jazz feel, eighth notes are not played with a "lazy" feel. The rhythm section should be playing some good straight time. Cues on the drum part are to let your drummer know what is going on in the orchestra...he needn't try to "catch" every nuance. Ensemble is to be played very straight-forwardly, and not to be phrased "pretty". The most important thing about a good performance for this arrangement is not sound, is not technique....it is TIME! SOFTLY FROM MY WINDOW. Grade 2 £25.00A real showcase for Alto Saxophone. Performance can be "loose" (not exact) but very "warm." Keep brass volume to aw minimum when used as background. Pyramids in the introduction and again at bar 37 should be more pronounced and attacked more than the rest of the arrangement. Concentrate on a beautiful over-all sound. EASIN' ALONG, Grade 2 £25.00 Since this arrangement is more linear than "blocked", weaker players will have an opportunity to learn by listening. All the many lines are doubled just for this reason. Finally at bar 71 the ensemble chorus appears. The trumpet section is rather low, so for this reason the other horns will have to "pull back" a little in volume, but always maintaining a good sense of rhythm and time. Not much dynamic range is needed for this arrangement. FOOTLOOSE Grade 2 £25.00 8th notes are especially short. Rhythm must supply a solid, steady beat for this arrangement to sound well. Some real solid, "laid down" drums will really benefit everyone. Choice of solos are all written out for the different instruments. Again, a very low trumpet section demands that everyone listen as not to cover up the melody. Keep it "driving" forward. THE BLUES MACHINE. Grade 4 £35.71 Originally written for the Count Basie orchestra in 1983, it was revised for this arrangement, and re-recorded on the Sammy Nestico THIS IS THE MOMENT CD. Features a long three-chorus sax section, plus a chance for many solos, and a very powerful ensemble chorus at 147. A MINOR AFFAIR. Grade 4 £35.71 Written and recorded by the Sammy Nestico orchestra on the CD THIS IS THE MOMENT. Strive for a good blend of altos/trumpets and tenor/trombone figures. Mostly section material until the ensemble at bar 85. Minor blues always offers more color. No straight time for the guitar. He should be "comping" most of the way. SWINGIN'ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS. Grade 4 £35.71 Featured number on the Sammy Nestico CD THIS IS THE MOMENT. Dynamics and "feel" are of utmost importance in the playing of this arrangement. The first two bars can be omitted. A little less volume at bar 7, and then into the trumpet/alto statement of the theme. The new theme at bar 54 is to be played full, but at an mf dynamic marking. At this point make certain that the trumpets are playing less volume than the saxes and trombones. They are not "carrying the ball." Of course the ensemble at bar 116 is full and "tight." Bar 74 calls for crisp quarter notes from the band, and leads to a delicate last four bars. SUGAR VALLEY. Grade 2 £25.00. The coupling of alto saxes with trumpets, and tenor saxes with trombones demands a good balance, since most of the music in this arrangement is linear. The feel is definitely triplet oriented. Strive for a very "relaxed" ensemble feel at bar 53. SAMANTHA. Grade3-4 £35.71 Originally written for and played by Bud Shank, it is a showpiece for alto saxophone. The arrangement carries a wide dynamic range, and needs a very soft but smooth approach for background figures. An extremely large swell in bars 32 and 33 leads to a very powerful few bars of ensemble. It remains full until bar 50 and progresses into a quiet ending containing a brass pyramid. SORRY, WRONG NUMBER. Grade 3-4 £35.71 Straight ahead jazz. This arrangement can be played in a variety of tempos, but not too fast. After optional choruses "in front", there are two choruses, one soft (bar 33) and one full (bar 65) There is a large dynamic swing of volume in bars 70 and 71, and then the drums should explode in bar 72. From there on to the end it should be full and super-charged. A LITTLE BLUES, PLEASE. Grade 2 £25.00 This is an easy version of the blues, with a slightly different harmonic approach. Choose the instruments you wish to play the solos (optionally written). Almost all of the work in the arrangement is performed by sections rather than ensemble. It doesn't call for much dynamic range or technique...just good "time" featuring individual solos and sections. CHARLIE THE WHALE. Grade 4 £35.71 Written in two distinct styles. The tempo is bright in "two" allowing the rhythm section much latitude) and then into 4/4 (l'estesso) for the straight ahead jazz section at bar 47. The closed voicing sax section at bar 47 should be played strongly with a "tough" sound. The remainder of the arrangement is a straight ahead jazz feel with emphasis on sound ensemble playing and good time. CELEBRACION.Grade 4 £35.71 The first four bars are optional. The feel is a definite "two" for jazz Samba. The figures should be played crisply. Play quarter notes with an accent; play them short. Most of the syncopated rhythms are marked and played long. The rhythm section can take liberties with their parts to suit their taste. BASHFUL ALBERT. Grade 2 £25.00 The lines of this arrangement are divided contrapuntally into two sections. Trumpets/Alto Saxes and Trombone/Tenor saxes. Play these lines in a relaxed mode and at mf volume. This arrangement calls for short quarter notes. At the ensemble chorus at measure 69, we should strive for good balance, and very full sound. AFTER THE RAIN.Grade 4 £35.71 Go for a real "two-beat feel" for the first chorus. Transitions into a solid straight-ahead four beat at the trombone chorus. Sometimes trombones have a tendency to "speak" late. Make sure the time is moving straight ahead... .we're not after "pretty" here. The voicing at measure 69 sounds good if everyone takes some deep breaths and blow! Bar 85 wants the trombones short and crisp, while saxes and trumpets are phrasing their lines. Nice and easy does it at bar 104. Build it up again at 108 for the ending. AFTER YOU'VE GONE. Grade 4 £35.71 Very "laid-back" and easy for the first chorus. Use Guitar, Piano or your choice of instruments for the jazz sections. Drums should build up a bar before the ensemble at 61. The ensemble should be BIG!! From 75 to the end should be very light for a large contrast. KIJI TAKES A RIDE. Grade 4-5 £35.71 This is a real specialty number and can't be played by every jazz ensemble. It sounds much more difficult than it really is, but it does take on some additional instrumentation. It needs a second Keyboard (Synthesiser) plus Mallets and Percussion. (2) There is NO Guitar part. Recorded on the Sammy Nestico CD THIS IS THE MOMENT, this arrangement does away with the need for Flutes, Woodwind, French Horns and Tuba. It is a lot of fun to play, and individual parts are not extreme The bright tempo doesn't call for a lot of fancy syncopation.. With some heavy rehearsing, this could work well on a diversified program. FANCY PANTS. Grade 4 £35.71 Recorded by the Count Basie orchestra in 1986 and again by the SWR Big Band in 2005. (Basie-cally Sammy) It his in a medium-tempo (120) funk-jazz feel with room for some added solos and large ensemble sections. Fun to Play! SMALLTALK. Grade 3-4 £35.71 Medium Blues originally written and recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra (Have a Nice Day album) For the most part, it is a very light and melodic rendition of the blues with one full ensemble chorus. There is an optional flute written on the 1st Alto Sax part., and the 1st trumpet extends to a written high "D". Other parts are fairly easy. OUT OF THE NIGHT. Grade 5-6) £39.28Jazz Samba recorded on the Sammy Nestico CD, A Portrait of Sammy. A jazz samba written for a conventional jazz ensemble, in 3/4, it has no doubles, (optional Latin percussionist) The first Trumpet extends to a written high "D" and features solos by Electric Guitar and Tenor Sax. Excitingly different due to the time signature. ENDLESS SUMMER. Grade 4 £35.71 Jazz Production. This number features four moods. Rubato in 3A, a jazz waltz, straight ahead jazz in 4/4, returning to rubato in %). A very melodic tune that moves along comfortably in C minor. Along with some counterpoint, it features jazz solos by tenor sax and trumpet. THE QUEEN BEE. Grade 4 £35.71 Medium jazz and tempo. This number was Sammy's audition arrangement for the Count Basie orchestra, and has been a popular tune for over four decades. Features Sax chorus, some easy and full ensemble choruses, plus jazz tenor and piano solos. LISETTE, Grade 3 £35.71 Ballad. Lisette was originally recorded as a soprano sax solo feature on the Sammy Nestico CD, A Portrait of Sammy. This publication, written with standard instrumentation, gives you the option to be played as a soprano sax feature from the Alto sax 2 chair, or tenor sax solo from the Tenor saxl chair. The haunting solo leaves room for individual interpretation. Background parts are comfortably easy. NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT. Grade 4-5 £35.71 Medium Jazz recorded on the Quincy Jones-Sammy Nestico CD, "Basie and Beyond." Set in a medium jazz tempo, this tune covers every aspect of big band jazzbrass section chorus, two sax choruses, solos and big band ensemble. JAMIE. Grade 3-4 £35.71 Ballad recorded by Count Basie, this is in a quiet relaxed ballad style. The bridge opens up with saxes, followed by a dynamic ensemble, returning to a quiet treatment to the finish. The only solo is a short piano treatment. 88 BASIE STREET. Grade 4-5 £39.28 Medium Jazz. Tempo is 116. This is the classic written for Sammy Nestico album "Dark Orchid" and later reprised on the Nestico "A Portrait of Sammy" CD. As the title suggests, it features two piano solos. After piano, a double counterpoint chorus is followed by a dynamic 32 bar ensemble. LONELY STREET. Grade 3 £35.71 Ballad. This number is an alto sax featured ballad. Originally recorded by Count Basie on the 1968 album "Basie Straight Ahead" featuring the great saxophonist, Marshal Royal. SCOTT'S PLACE. Grade 3 £35.71 Relaxed Jazz. Medium tempo. Recorded by Count Basie on the "Have A Nice Day" album, it is reprised here with a full score and features Basie style subtlety with tenor sax and ensemble choruses. Optional flute on Alto sax chair, but written out for either instrument. HAVE A NICE DAY. Grade 3 £35.71Medium Jazz and tempo. Recorded by Count Basie on the "Have A Nice Day" album, features piano and trumpet solos. Has some nice ensemble choruses. First trumpet's top note is concert high "D" SMACK DAB IN THE MIDDLE. Grade 4-5 £35.71Medium-bright Jazz. This number features combos within the band, and alternates back and forth between the keys of F and Ab. There are two sax choruses and solos for trumpet, trombone, and tenor saxophone. MARGUARITE. Grade 4-5 £35.71 Jazz Samba. A Jazz Samba is "feel" more than anything else. The Rhythm section should play in a very free style within the framework of the arrangement, and need not "read" every note. The melody at bar 17 and throughout the first chorus should be played with a "light" approach. "HEAVY" bogs things down...but when the volume is turned up, the figures are rhythmically simple enough to "move" the whole ensemble. Always think "2". The optional solos are transcribed from the Sammy Nestico Orchestra CD. 15th September 2007 |
